Childhood Diabetes Mellitus in Federal Teaching Hospital Gombe

Abstract
Background: Diabetes Mellitus is a group of metabolic diseases in which there are high blood glucose levels over a prolonged period. There has been an increase in occurrence of this disease in childhood which may be a reflection of rising obesity.
Objectives: To determine the prevalence of diabetes in childhood, commonest mode of presentation and outcome of hospitalization in Federal Teaching Hospital, Gombe. Methodology: Case notes of children who were admitted and treated for Diabetes Mellitus and its complications between January 2005 and December 2014 were reviewed. Results: There were 29 cases of Type1 Diabetes mellitus out of 14,943 admissions giving a prevalence of 19.4/1000 Conclusion: Most children with diabetes mellitus in our centre presented with diabetic ketoacidosis; however the outcome is generally good.
